Major Price Cut for Hemophilia B Gene Therapy in China: Belpodacagene Reduced by RMB 1.4 Million

Hemophilia B Gene Therapy Price Cut by RMB 1.4 Million — One Treatment, Years of Bleed-Free Follow-Up

A One-Time Gene Therapy Designed to Reduce the Need for Frequent Factor IX Infusions

Belpodacagene Injection (BBM-H901, brand name Xinjiuning®) is the first gene therapy approved in China for adults with moderate-to-severe Hemophilia B. Approved by China’s National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) in 2025, the therapy is designed to enable the patient’s own body to continuously produce Factor IX after a single administration, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for frequent lifelong Factor IX replacement infusions.

Belpodacagene was initially priced at approximately RMB 2.79 million per treatment.

In June 2026, the manufacturer significantly reduced the patient payment price in China to:

RMB 1.39 million or less

This represents a reduction of approximately:

RMB 1.4 million

In several Chinese cities where supplementary medical insurance programs cover the therapy, eligible domestic patients may see their out-of-pocket cost reduced further, in some cases to approximately RMB 1 million or below, depending on local insurance and assistance policies.

Hemophilia B is an inherited bleeding disorder caused by a deficiency or dysfunction of coagulation Factor IX.

Conventional treatment generally requires repeated intravenous Factor IX replacement, sometimes dozens or even more than one hundred infusions per year, to reduce spontaneous bleeding and long-term joint damage.

Gene therapy takes a fundamentally different approach.

Rather than repeatedly replacing the missing clotting factor, Belpodacagene delivers a functional Factor IX gene so that the patient’s own body can produce Factor IX over an extended period.

The goal is therefore to:

restore sustained endogenous Factor IX production after a single treatment.

Long-term follow-up data were reported for the first 10 patients treated in an investigator-initiated study, with approximately 4–5 years of follow-up.

Reported Factor IX activity levels included:

  • 4 patients above 50%

  • 3 patients between 35% and 50%

  • 2 patients above 10%

Most notably, from six months after infusion through the latest follow-up:

9 patients remained free from bleeding events and 9 patients required no Factor IX replacement therapy

These findings suggest that a single administration may provide sustained clinical benefit for several years in some patients.

From Lifelong Repeated Infusions to a One-Time Treatment

The major potential advantage of Belpodacagene is its ability to transform Hemophilia B management from repeated lifelong replacement therapy into a single-administration gene therapy.

For patients who achieve a strong and durable response, potential benefits include:

Fewer bleeding episodes
Reduced or eliminated Factor IX infusions
Higher endogenous Factor IX activity
Reduced burden of repeated intravenous treatment
Potential long-term improvement in quality of life
