CAR-T Therapy for Solid Tumors in China

CAR-T cell therapy is a personalized cancer treatment that uses a patient’s own immune cells to recognize and attack tumor cells.

During treatment, T cells are collected from the patient and modified so they can identify a specific target on cancer cells. These CAR-T cells are then infused back into the body, where they seek out and destroy tumor cells carrying that target.

CAR-T for Gastric Cancer

One of the most important recent advances is CAR-T therapy targeting Claudin 18.2 (CLDN18.2).

CLDN18.2 is commonly expressed in certain gastric cancers and gastroesophageal junction cancers, making it a useful treatment target for selected patients.

In China, CLDN18.2-targeted CAR-T therapy has been approved for eligible patients with advanced gastric cancer and gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma.

Clinical studies have shown that this therapy can produce meaningful tumor responses in some patients, including those whose cancer has progressed after previous treatments.

For selected patients with advanced gastric cancer, CAR-T may provide an additional treatment option when standard therapies are no longer effective.

CAR-T for Liver Cancer

CAR-T therapy has also shown encouraging results in liver cancer.

In studies involving GPC3-targeted CAR-T therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma, some patients achieved long-lasting disease control.

Long-term follow-up has reported patients remaining tumor-free for more than ten years after treatment.

These results suggest that CAR-T therapy may, in carefully selected patients, generate a durable anti-tumor immune response.

Who May Benefit?

CAR-T therapy is not suitable for every patient.

Eligibility depends on factors such as:

  • Cancer type
  • Tumor stage
  • Target or biomarker expression
  • Previous treatments
  • Overall health condition

Patients usually require detailed medical review and biomarker testing before treatment can be considered.

A New Treatment Option for Advanced Cancer

For selected patients with advanced or treatment-resistant cancer, CAR-T therapy may offer a new treatment pathway beyond chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and conventional immunotherapy.

In China, CAR-T treatment for solid tumors has already shown promising results in gastric cancer and liver cancer, including significant tumor responses and, in some cases, long-term disease control.

For eligible patients, CAR-T may provide a new opportunity when conventional treatment options have become limited.
